“We started thinking about our second album, and it seemed like we had several strands of what we did, a nihilistic side, a bit of an unhinged side, noise and some semblance of songs. We were also playing 20 min live sets, which were all extending a single idea. Liking the idea of coherent albums I said, ‘which version of ourselves should we be for this?’, and Phil said ‘let’s do all of them’.”

Notice how they said “second album” there? And yet this record’s title is conspicuously appended Volume III. All I’ll say is, if you like your advertising false then Stoke’s Omnibadger, birthing an LP here from found sounds and dictaphones and eight-tracked drums, have got you covered.

Lick One

Unnameable matter, rolling fog, luminous rumble. And then … stuttering, cluttering percussion loops? Dubbed-out delays juxtaposed with washes of white noise? A kind of exotica-in-photo-negative emerges. African Head Charge, these are your new mates - they call themselves Zoviet * France.

Speeding Ground (Part 1)

*Tony Soprano voice*

Is this meant to be relaxing? Am I meant to be relaxed by this? This thing that sounds like insects whining in a too-hot-summer sun? These droning behemoths of distortion, at once enfolding and needling? And then there’s all that, waddayacallit, drumming that starts real slow about halfway and then locks in all Liebezeit-style? And that screeching, like a pig in a poke - Jesus Christ!

When you can get my boy Seth Manchester in to give it that real The Body flavour, that kinda abrasion/clarity thing - well, why wouldn’t you put Sethy into bat? He’s one of my best earners when it comes to this shit.

Not many people know this, but This Heat were actually from Jersey. I used to play ball with them over in Newark during holidays…

What I Want Is Not The Most Important Thing Right Now

Omnibadger, again; “When you’re in a band situation you can often find yourself having a ‘yeah but we’re not really going to do that’-type conversation. Someone suggests something and it appears to be a bit *insert adjective* to someone, and they think that it’s funny/interesting/weird or whatever and yeah, but we’re not actually going to do that of course.

We decided to embrace the ideas that in other situations might be the ‘we’re not really going to do that though’ ideas, and do them. And that sometimes meant doing a conventional verse/chorus/verse/chorus structure that we might otherwise reject.”

Conventional verse/chorus structure may be the moon Omnibadger shot for here, but Abba it most certainly is not. ‘What I Want Is Not The Most Important Thing Right Now’ (good advice, that) may oscillate back and forth between sections, and it is certainly more of a sTrAiGhTfOrWaRd PoP sOnG than the two tracks before it, but there’s still enough screech and splutter about this thing to sort wheat from chaff.

Surfin’

You thought this ‘Surfin’’ shit was gonna sound like The Beach Boys didn’t you? Well ya wrong - dead wrong! The drums recall a JPEGMAFIA beat being given an acid-bath, and I’m unsure if that lead sound is an electric guitar or a robo-horse with the whinny setting stuck on maximum.

This one makes me think of Thank if their synths gained sentience and demanded their six months among the pomegranates alongside their six in hell.

You Never Tell Me What You Think

Monster movie music for coked-up lounge lizards. Really insidious and skeezy and … tempting and … oh look, I’ve already gone into the club toilet with it.

Equations For A Falling Body

You guys ever fuck w/ the band High Places? They were around in the late-2000s/early 2010s, kinda involved with the same NYC sort-of-avant world as Animal Collective etc.

Well, the first few seconds of ‘Equations For A Falling Body’, all sun-hazed atmospherics, got me thinking I might be in for The High Places Renaissance I So Crave. Little did I know that it was actually the Guttersniping hour. What this track delivered was sheets of xeno-noise; serrated blasts sucked into wormholes of anti-rhythm; something like singing rising up from the song’s deep; a mid-section that, by its spare portent, finds in the quiet a power just as potent as the technoid Lord Of The Flies ritual sacrifice that follows.

Like so much of Omnibadger’s superb second (not third) full-length, ‘Equations For A Falling Body’ is the sound of subconscious. Let go the rope of cognisance - of positivism, literalism, a natural order as dictated by patent falsehoods - and one finds fertile murk. Ominous and invigorating, unknowably opaque and yet somehow more familiar than language or coherent thought, we skulk in the soup of ages and bring self to mind more slyly.

As SOPHIE called it; "I could be anything I want. Anyhow, any place, anywhere, anyone, any form, any shape, anyway, anything". Where Xeon captured all the pain of liberation in polish and gleam, Omnibadger summon it from scuzz. And yet this, too, is a world startled by its own reimagining - not quite “new” exactly, but certainly a pearl from grit.
