about

HERE IT COMES

What we can be certain of is that HX Pop - recorded for Cruel Nature last winter & finally dropping this August - is it's Waheela's first cassette release. Something of a departure from previous releases, HX Pop finds Waheela fucking about in the Soundroom with M.P. Wood at the controls, making vague and intermittent gestures towards song structure and casually blagging a recording of one of their most notable live sets to date. Blue, pink and blossoming all-over it's a goddam efflorescence in sound and plastic.

A GREAT BIG DRAGON

For anybody who's been following Waheela's career to date Side H is going to be the talking point; i mean it's a bloody suite ffs. Opener TEAMS finds the band all caps, raging and over-eager, squalling their way into the tempestuous frigidity of the North Sea. From this dark sea emerges second track Hoffman - a tribute for WHLA-favourite Philip Seymour - providing a muted rattling respite from their more typical clatter and thrash. What makes it red finishes off this side of the tape; it's a slightly spurious meditation on fizzy drinks and the electromagnetic spectrum which amounts to yr *typical* Waheela half-hour jam compressed into something like ten minutes and hey, we haven't even mentioned the Malaysian fireworks...

WITH TEETH

The flip is Side X, its sole contents being a live recording of Waheela's performance at last year's Octernal festival - finally you too can hear five guys idiot-prog about in a deconsecrated church. Battling waves of reverberation this jam finds Waheela comparatively muted but also oddly textured, luxuriant; imagine some steroid tyrant striding down a corridor carved out of lapis lazuli or something.

So yeah; HX Pop by Waheela - new things committed to cassette tape & readily available soon all thanks to IG Farben / BASF, the utile properties of magnetism, the practical sonic chops of M. P. Wood & the curatorial nouse of Cruel Nature's Steve Strode: ALL HAIL & <3 <3 <3 <3
