ZEBULARIN is an ever-changing and shapeshifting instrumental collective hailing from Stuttgart.

Besides the mutual interest in improvisation, science, alchemy and the social implications of music, all of its members have different and sometimes even diverging musical backgrounds rooted in ambient, jazz, noise, classical music, postrock or freeform electronics.

There is no focus on a specific genre or aesthetic whatsoever, but rather on the constant interplay of tension and release as an intuitive playground of joined forces. Sounds are prone to aggregation and coagulation, structures pile up and explode/implode, deteriorate and vanish. Sometimes they reappear. Uneventfullness and density are always interconnected. Openness is the key.

The second Zebularin album called „Semantic Radiation“ explores form, function and space through grinding guitar and drum freakouts, stubborn digital audio manipulation, analog drones, fluid synth, sax and vibraphone minimalism and arcane field recordings. There´s a lot to be discovered in the fluctuating soundscapes and vibrant textures. Sometimes their intuitive sounddesign seems to be hot and cold at the same time, radiating sympathy and antipathy in equal parts. At times there´s a dynamic and uplifting fuzziness flirting with ambient, noise, jazz and and modern composition without ever getting close to blunt genre specifications. Once again the electroacoustic ensemble embraces collective improvisation as well as rigid modular composition and establishes a genuine, multilayered soundworld. In the end „Semantic Radiation“ manages to overcome the ubiquitous shards of meaning, the polished deceitfulness and the glossy hysteria of today´s newspeak in a musical way. Or as one of the players fittingly put it: “The world is truly f*cked but there´s still humour, passion and joy to be found in collective experience, hence we will transcend“. (Mike Kaercher, Berlin, January 2021)
