about

"the sort of record that Omni Trio should have put out circa ‘Skeleton Keys’. It’s loud, it’s abrasive and it’s fun."
- Christopher Owens, Predominance 31
www.thepensivequill.com/2023/09/predominance-31.html

"With Aphex Twin having released his latest EP, Blackbox Life Recorder 21f, last month, fellow U.K. gadget wrangler Mike Neaves drops something that hits just as hard in You’re Welcome. Echoing the origins of techno, drum ’n’ bass, footwork and general video game-inspired madness, You’re Welcome sees Neaves landing blow after blow in something designed for those chemically fuelled late nights and early mornings."

Mike Neaves latest LP "You're Welcome" is a masterpiece of spidery fractured techno, made on "not that much" equipment with all live takes from a sequencer.

The cover art goes some way to begin to convey the sense of liminal disquiet from the tracks inside: A desk stranded in a decaying narrow room under ugly fluorescent light. Mechanical industry and fucked architecture. The jittery Monday AM interior of your skull, and the mutant sounds of the weekender you wish you were at instead.

Here's your daily to-do list:

"Grief Waves" greets you with pummelling kicks and nauseous washes of synth punctured by bass fizz, like an office block on fire.

"Let Me Go Again" squirms into view next, almost familiar vocal timbres desiccated by midi programming. What sounds like 4 drum n bass LPs unevenly stacked on top of each other eventually decays into an uncanny but familiar slick.

The title track is an answering machine message from hell. It's for you. You're Welcome.

"Satisfaction Plummets" resembles Footwork, made with a migraine and an unnecessary amount of limbs. Splattering synths and bass tones bubble upwards into the track until the space between your ears eventually floods.

"Depon+on+on" chews up more nearly human vocals into a thick paste, which are then pinched and zapped into unpleasant shapes by a greasy assembly line.

"You May Be Lacking In Taste" is a relentless thump of dread, irregular hi-hats for teeth, unsettling harmonies surfacing and sinking into a boiling lake of shrill noise.

The penultimate track "Requiem for Walker" cleanses your pallette with murky submerged melodies half-glimpsed through modulating static haze. The man himself would be proud.

"Drop the Sauce" concludes the album, all blunt force hammering percussion and a panic alarm sounding somewhere nearby in the dark. You'll never be able to find it and turn it off in time. But it's ok. You've hit your daily word count and can stumble into the daylight. It's later than you think.
